"How long ago have you lost them?" she finally responded.
This sudden question took Janeway aback, but then it clicked. "We noticed there was a fluctuating temporal variance in--"
"How long?" the other woman pressed, completely serious.
With a blink, Janeway let her know:
"Nine days."
... "Your 'day' is a single rotation of your homeworld on its axis?" she queried solemnly.
"Yes," Janeway answered, feeling a cool dread at the captain's question, and watching her calculate it briefly, almost unwillingly as her eyes turned askance, then closed. "Captain Havetsi?"

Set in an alternate universe shortly before
season 2's "Alliances," the tale begins with the disappearance of
an away team.
Following them through a temporally unstable
plasma field only to meet a friendly and ancient culture, Janeway's worst
fears are proven, plus some. Her crewpeople had indeed perished--during
a war to free that region of space, and over a century ago.
Feeling Voyager's loss and beholden to her
promises, a dying elder who had been close to the survivors of the shuttle
asks to share her memories of the people who made a great impact on her
society and region. But is that all she desires to repay?

My everlasting thanks to my dedicated and uber-patient
beta readers, Annie M. and Susan D., who faithfully bore through my drafts
as I wrote them, and gave me worlds of advice I could not have finished
without. Also, to Ann M., PJ in NH and Tracy S., who bravely set about
looking through the chapters for glitches while I edited.
Star Trek and its characters
belong to Paramount. I merely think too much.
